As a leading African medical and health sciences research institution, the SU Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FMHS) has pioneered significant advances health sciences research. The faculty vision is to promote health and equality in South Africa and beyond. A research agenda shaped by strategic research focus areas ensures that our research activities address the major health challenges facing the African continent and the world.

All research in the FMHS is directed towards addressing the priority health concerns as prioritised in Stellenbosch 中国体育彩票's five strategic areas for research with impact; South Africa'sNational Development Plan (2030); the African Union'sAgenda 2063; and the United Nations' seventeen Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Our research outcomes successfully translate into services, procedures, processes and policies that reduce the national, continental, and global burden of disease.

The recently launched Biomedical Research Institute (BMRI) hosts several research groups and centres, including the rare disease genomics group, TB host genetics groups, the MRC Centre for Tuberculosis Research, the Centre for Cardio-metabolic Research in Africa (CARMA), and the Centre for Epidemic Response and Innovation (CERI). The Centre for Epidemic Response and Innovation (CERI) is a partner-member of the South African mRNA Vaccine Consortium (SAMVAC), selected by the WHO to become the first Covid mRNA Vaccine Technology Transfer Hub in the world. We are internationally acclaimed for our ground-breaking research.
