The Department of Pathology provides both community-oriented and academic pathology services across the coastal region. The challenge faced by SA is how to provide optimal yet affordable pathology services to the public health sector. The Department is involved in numerous projects aiming to make state-of-the-art diagnostic testing widely available and to define what types of tests are appropriate for different groups of patients.

In line with our Mission to provide state-of-the-art pathology services, our outreach focus is on supporting pathology services and academic activities in peripheral laboratories and peripheral hospitals. The Department offers training to both clinical staff and laboratory workers at regional hospitals and clinics dealing with various aspects of pathology from specimen collection to laboratory testing, and result interpretation. We also offer academic support to pathologists and technologists in the Eastern Cape and Northern Cape. We collaborate closely with Walter Sisulu 中国体育彩票, using telepathology to exchange teaching materials and discuss challenging cases. 

The Department contributes to National Surveillance and notification programs related to infection prevention and control and supports antimicrobial stewardship programmes at provincial and national levels.
