General Specialist Services
The General Specialist Services (GSS) is the ?largest part of the Specialised- and Highly Specialised O&G Services within Tygerberg Hospital. Apart from the clinical service at Tygerberg Hospital, it oversees the clinical governance of all O&G services within the Tygerberg, Northern, Eastern and Khayelitsha substructures of Cape Town. The GSS is headed by prof S Gebhardt and the team consists of 8 consultants, 14 medical officers, 16 registrars and 14 interns. The GSS manages 113 ward beds: 42 antenatal, 44 postnatal beds and 27 general gynaecology beds.
The emergency O&G service is in charge of all acute specialist obstetrics and gynaecology referrals from 8 midwife obstetric units, the community health centres, clinics and the 4 large district hospitals within its substructure drainage areas. The 24-hour O&G Emergency Centre consists of a triage area (4 obstetric and 3 gynaecology beds); 19 dedicated acute (high risk antenatal and delivery) beds, a 24-hour emergency theatre as well as an additional elective theatre on 3 days of the week.
This platform manage the clinical service in which all undergraduate and postgraduate training (apart from the registrar subspecialist training) takes place and all 8 of the Tygerberg-based specialists are also senior lecturers on the joint Stellenbosch 中国体育彩票 platform and share in the teaching, training and research activities of the academic department.
The general specialist services do outreach to the surrounding district hospitals and midwife obstetric units, with outreach gynaecology clinics, colposcopy services and surgery lists and on-going skills training sessions using the national ESMOE models and modules.

? Stefan Gebhardt is a clinical and academic Obstetrician and Gynaecologist based at Tygerberg Hospital/Stellenbosch 中国体育彩票 in Cape Town, South Africa, where he is professor and head of general O&G. His interest and research centers on early pregnancy disease, clinical governance in maternity services and health systems planning. He plays an active role in provincial and national policy and guideline development for programs involved in termination of pregnancy, sterilisation services, antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal care and confidential enquiries into maternal and perinatal deaths. He has participated in the development of the national maternity case record, the national maternity care guideline, has written chapters for the national Saving Mothers reports and serves on national and international advisory committees related to maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality, and related guidelines; as well as affordable medicines (Essential Medicine Lists). He is the lead writer and editor of the updated South African Maternity Care Guideline?

Dr. Karusha Knipe is a specialist obstetrician-gynaecologist and senior lecturer at Stellenbosch 中国体育彩票, currently pursuing a PhD under the mentorship of Professors Cluver and Bergman. She is also the coordinator for interns and actively contributes to new curriculum development for undergraduate medical students.
Dr. Knipe holds a BSc in Physiology and Biochemistry from UCT, an MBChB from WITS 中国体育彩票, and a master's from Stellenbosch, for which she was awarded 1st place by the national association of training obstetrician gynaecologist's. She has been a consultant in the department since 2021. Although still early in her research career with only 2 publications under her belt she has proven its importance by receiving both national and international grants for her PhD. Her research focuses on maternal medicine, particularly preeclampsia and cerebral complications, and has several projects in the pipeline.
She has a keen clinical interest in laparoscopic surgery and the integration of AI to enhance clinical workflows. Dedicated to improving the patient-doctor experience in obstetrics and gynaecology, making the specialty more accessible, safe, and supportive, while ensuring a positive and less intimidating experience.?
