Science and Technology Studies
Science is a human and therefore social endeavour. Scientific research is practised within various institutional contexts: universities, science councils, national research institutes and laboratories, private firms and NGO's. Scientists form epistemic communities with their rules and norms. They communicate in certain ways and form 'citation cultures' that identify bodies of scholarship. CREST's two postgraduate programmes in Science and Technology Studies focus on the social, political, economic, epistemological, historical and ethical dimension of science as a complex human system, with specific focus on South Africa and Africa. However, one of these programmes, the MPhil in Science and Technology Studies, has been phased out and is no longer offered. CREST is in the process of introducing a new MPhil in Science and Society Studies in 2027, subject to accreditation by the Council on Higher Education. Unlike the MPhil in Science and Technology Studies, the new MPhil in Science and Society Studies will have no taught modules and will consist of a single research module (thesis) of 180 credits.
Applications for the PhD in Science and Technology Studies are still welcome. The programme consists of a single research module (dissertation) of 360 credits. It delves into the intricate relationship between science and society, in a way that is at the forefront of the field. It explores various kinds of science-society interactions, how social, political, and cultural forces shape research and science, and how research and science, in turn, influence society, politics, and culture. The in-depth research done within this module is aimed at emphasising the multifaceted nature of research and science in the broadest sense of the word (to include all disciplines and fields), examining its practice and uptake within various institutional and societal contexts, including universities, science councils, national research institutes, museums, private firms, non-governmental organisations and communities.
Depending on the chosen research topic, students may examine the scientific publication system and gain a thorough understanding of research evaluation methods, including bibliometrics and scientometric indicators. Effective scientific research management is another key focus of the research in this field, as students may explore the strategies and practices employed to ensure that scientific activities and outcomes benefit both the scientific community and the wider society. Recognising the growing emphasis on public science engagement, students may critically examine the role of scientists in engaging with non-scientific audiences beyond the confines of the scientific community.
