The Department focuses on the languages and cultures of the ancient Mediterranean and Near Eastern worlds with the emphasis on the connection between antiquity and the world of today. Our programmes are taught in English and in Afrikaans and, with the exception of the programmes Honours in Ancient Cultures and Honours in Ancient Languages, can all be taken by non-residential students. All our programmes are suitable for international students.
Our honours and master's programmes take one year to complete.
Our master's programmes equip students with a theoretical framework and interpretative skills. At the doctoral level this culminates in original research that generates new knowledge. Doctoral studies take at least two years.

?ANCIENT CULTURES
The BAHons programme follows on a bachelor's degree with Ancient Cultures, Ancient History or one of the ancient languages as a major.
Themes: Ancient literature, ar?t, mythology, religion, philosophy of life, political thought, daily life and reception of antiquity.??
The MA programme requires the writing of a thesis containing the results of research on an aspect of ancient cultures.
The PhD programme requires the writing of a dissertation that contains the results of independent and original research on a research problem.?
ANCIENT LANGUAGES
The BAHons programme consists of coursework and an assignment that broadens your knowledge of one of the ancient languages, namely Biblical Hebrew, Greek or Latin. Specialisation is possible in:
- Biblical Hebrew or New Testament Greek linguistics;
- Bible translation;
- New Testament Greek literature;
- Classical Greek literature; and?
- Latin literature?
