SA Research Chair in Green Hydrogen Integration and Transition

The transformation of the South African energy sector involves the realization of a diversified energy eco-system. The research under this Green Hydrogen Chair aims to assist in developing the roadmap for the harnessing of energy via renewable resources through hydrogen generation, its conversion, storage, distribution, and uses. The integration and transitioning of this fuel source, and its derivatives, into existing hard-to-abate manufacturing operations (power reduction from fossil fuels) will form a key focus in meeting the set targets for carbon reduction, by 2030, eventually to attain net-zero by 2050.  A quick transition of energy integration into current manufacturing and industrial operations is critical, and strategic plans for process integrations, systems optimization for the new operations, and/or technologies will rely on established and new networks and alliances to bring in expertise and knowledge sharing. The advancement and awareness of specialized skills in developing and sustaining the hydrogen economy, will also form part of the workplan through training, awareness activities such as workshops and development of teaching programmes and modules, for offering across higher education institutes and training institutions.

Hydrogen is one of several platform chemicals and a major constituent of other valuable power fuel sources, hence a critical aim of this Chair is to investigate a diversified energy mix solution model per locality as identified in the Hydrogen South African Road Map. There is significant need in reducing power usage, decarbonizing and applying renewable energy sources in cost effective and sustainable ways. Aligned with the UN's sustainable development goals the outcomes of this project will aim to consider  feasible technology routes in green fuels production, consider a systems engineering integrated approach within industrial economic zones, and partner with communities and bodies to represent them in the transition and its integration. This is a SASOL funded Chair with support from the NRF and DSI hence the primary stakeholders are SASOL and its business affiliates, government and the communities these new projects will impact.
