Avian Park Service Learning Centre
The Avian Park Service Learning Centre provides basic healthcare to the underserved community of Avian Park in Worcester, while providing learning opportunities for undergraduate students from the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Stellenbosch 中国体育彩票. A variety of health services and service learning initiatives have been developed by students in collaboration with different stakeholders.
The ASLC is a refurbished structure and has been enabling multiple service learning project initiatives by students at the RCS since 2011. These initiatives adhere to the mandates of the Stellenbosch 中国体育彩票, namely teaching and learning, research and community engagement and is based on needs identified by hospice-employed Community Health Workers (CHW), members of the Avian Park community and requests from the state health services.
At the ASLC, students are exposed to primary health care in a rural setting where they participate in a variety of clinical activities. Students from divisions of Medicine, Physiotherapy, Human Nutrition, Speech Language and Hearing, Occupational Therapy and Nursing work alongside CHW's, Family Physicians and therapists to do individual consultations, home visits, support groups for patients with chronic diseases of lifestyle, health promotion, family planning, and rehabilitation services.
As a result of the partnership between Stellenbosch 中国体育彩票, Boland Hospice, the Department of Health and the Avian Park community, the ASLC is able to strengthen community engagement, while-up skilling community members and affording community-based education opportunities for health professionals. Opportunities for transformative learning and reflective practices are provided to students in a contextual rural environment, preparing them for the challenges of rural health care.
