What can I do with a Sport Science degree??
Graduates can pursue careers in sports coaching, fitness training and consultation, strength and conditioning, athlete development, sport physiology, health and wellness coaching, sports, recreation and events management, sports history, occupational health and safety, ergonomics, research, and more.
Each of these careers may require specific certifications or further education beyond a bachelor's degree in Sport Science, such as a master's or doctoral degree, or professional certification, depending on the role and location. The field of Sport Science offers a fulfilling opportunity to impact individual lives and communities positively through the promotion of health, wellness, and physical activity.
Undergraduate programme: BSc in Sport Science
This programme studies human movement from various perspectives, which includes the following elements namely, the physiological, the psychological, anatomical, health and wellness and the biomechanical components. The programme covers the following areas: applied anatomy and biomechanics, motor learning, sport and exercise physiology, sport ethics, sport and exercise psychology, exercise and sport programme design and the implementation, sport injuries, coaching, adapted movement programmes, and the scientific basis of exercise science and fitness training. The practical components of the modules offers students a wide experience of human movement and the development of coaching and exercise science skills. Once graduated, students who have completed their undergraduate degrees, can in addition register themselves with REPSSA (Registration for Exercise Specialists South Africa), as a qualified personal trainer which is an affiliation to the national fitness body which includes liability insurance. Thus, they will have their degree and an affiliation.

NOTE: For professional pathways in Biokinetics and Kinderkinetics, advanced academic pursuits are necessary. It is recommended to seek guidance from the Division of Movement Science & Exercise Therapy for further information.
Minimum Academic Requirement for a BSc Sport Science degree:
Students follow the generic BSc course curriculum in their first year. From the second year, the emphasis shifts to Sport Science and Physiology.

Special provisions
Selection for the programme is done according to clear guidelines, which are based on both academic and non-academic merits. If you are selected, you must complete a medical history form. If you are declared medically unfit, you will not be allowed to register for or continue with this programme.
You must obey the prescribed regulations regarding clothing. You can obtain more information on these rules from the Division of Sport Science at the beginning of the academic year.
TAKE NOTE: Should you wish to qualify as a high school teacher after obtaining a BSc degree, you may take the Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) in the Faculty of Education. Your subject choice for your degree programme, however, should enable you to teach two school subjects. Depending on your undergraduate subject combination, you could teach the following school subjects: Life Sciences, Natural Sciences and Mathematical Literacy.
BSc Honours in Performance Sport?
The BSc Honours degree in Performance Sport is the science of understanding and learning how to apply the specialized training methodologies of competitive high-level athletes who compete in individual and team sports. Students who study in this focused area, provide scientific services to healthy individuals on all levels of the sport participation continuum, as well as in the fitness industry. The subjects include: Exercise and Sport Physiology, Biomechanics, Sport Psychology, Current Topics in Sport and Exercise Science (Strength and Conditioning), Research Methodology and Professional Practice (Work-based learning). Additionally, there are a list of elective subjects which students can choose from to further enhance their skills (E.g. Kinanthropometry). Apart from the academic component, students apply their knowledge both theoretically and practically in the form of sport strength & conditioning, coaching and sport science opportunities in different professional working environments. Our students are placed at specific stakeholders where there are existing formal collaborations. These include the following high performance environments: Stellenbosch Football Club, Maties Sport, Bloemhof High School, Paul Roos High School, Endurocad and Stellenbosch Triathlon Squad. Work experience is gained by the students on the long-term development of sport people, ranging from schools, clubs all the way up to the elite level at the top of the performance chain. Performance Sport students are upskilled with tangible skills and competencies in order to be desirable for the workplace. These skills include amongst other things; the art of coaching, program design in all fitness and exercise science domains, video and performance analysis, biomechanical movement analysis, strength & conditioning, load monitoring & data handling, latest skills in sport technology (GPS & Velocity based training), trends in recovery methods, sport management and sport scientific fitness testing. All of the opportunities above include working with people who are differently-abled as well. Once graduated students who have completed their degrees in Performance Sport, they can in addition register themselves with REPSSA (Registration for Exercise Specialists South Africa), for the highest designation namely, a Sport Science Conditioning Coach which is an affiliation to the national fitness body which includes liability insurance. Students with this degree can work, for example, as:

- Start their own businesses working with athletes or healthy clients with fitness goals

- Sport Scientists to athletes / teams
Please note that there will be no intake for the BA (Sport Science) degree from 2025 onwards due to the phasing out of the programme. This decision has been made to streamline the academic offerings. Current students enrolled in the BA (Sport Science) programme, including those specialising in English Studies, Geography and Environmental Studies, Afrikaans and Dutch, or Psychology, will be accommodated to complete their degrees until 2028. Specific assessment arrangements for the Sport Science modules will be made to ensure that all students can fulfil their programme requirements within this timeframe.
