?The Research, Evidence and Development Initiative (READ-It) was an accountable grant funded by UK aid through the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) (project number 300342-104) and?? ran from 15 May 2018 to 31 December 2024. READ-It built upon the previous work of the UK aid-funded Effective Health Care Research Consortium (EHCRC) (grant number 5242).

The Research, Evidence & Development Initiative (READ-It) programme has a track record of over 20 years in being trusted partners of national and international policymakers, in conducting high-impact, responsive rigorous evidence synthesis, and in delivering it in time to inform global and national policy and practice decisions.

For the period from 15th May 2018 to 6th December 2024, our key performance indicator was to increase the number of evidence-informed decisions by global, regional and national decision makers that benefit the poor and vulnerable, including women.

Our unique position to achieve this impact stems from:

  • Our leadership in doing evidence synthesis:
    • identifying the right topics,
    • using robust methods and
    • delivering timely evidence synthesis to inform for policy and national, regional, and international levels.
  • Our leadership in capacity enhancement for conduct and use of evidence synthesis, we advance methods for conducting evidence synthesis and in doing so enable others to do the same.
  • Our programme has been reflexive to the shifting ecosystem, to developments in the field, using reflection on progress to date to develop strong academic, technical, and strategic direction.

Over the project period we have achieved a lot.

??READ-IT TEAM ADVANCING GLOBAL AND NATIONAL GUIDELINE DEVELOPMENT

?READ-It played core methodological roles and informed national and global guideline and policy development. In Year 2 READ-It staff and activities pivoted to COVID-19 global and national priorities, whilst continuing to work on “core" READ-It projects and reviews. Across the 5-years:
  • WHO guidelines for diagnosis and/or management of various conditions
  • Other guidelines published which with READ-It team support:
  • National guidelines

CONDUCTING IMPACTFUL EVIDENCE SYNTHESIS AND ADVANCING METHODS?

?The methods and evidence-to-policy procedures that READ-It developed play a significant role in underpinning World Health Organization (WHO) and country governments' responses and has delivered immediate impact on policy, practice, and health outcomes, particularly for vulnerable populations in Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs).

READ-It's work on high-impact reviews and 'core' projects continued throughout the programme and cumulatively since 2018, READ-It has exceeded the planned targets for high-impact reviews - delivering more than three times the cumulative planned target.

?High-impact Cochrane reviews and non-Cochrane reviews
?Published methods papers contributing towards improved review quality, efficiency, or uptake.?
?Cumulative target planned: 24?
?Cumulative actual target achieved and exceeded by 6th December 2024: 78
?Cumulative target planned: 7
?Cumulative actual target achieved and exceeded by 6th December 2024: 16
??Definition of high-impact: Reviews are high-impact if they achieve any of the following:
1. inform global, regional, or national guidelines and policies
2. inform policies and spending in health programmes
3. generate global debate in international blogs and policy areas where views are strong and evidence less established
4. are cited in the scientific literature (> 10)
5. attract newspaper and internet attention (Altmetric score > 100). [also consider national dailies]
