In an age when the lessons of history seem to have been forgotten by men who wield power, I seek to give voice to the marginalised and oppressed of classical antiquity, with a view to sensitising my students and others to the marginalised and oppressed of our time. From teaching about enslaved people, Roman sex work and the Other in Roman literature, to my PhD project about the power dynamics in Augustine's anti-Donatist speech acts, I am energised by the work of stripping classics of its androcentric and colonial baggage and opening up new ways of understanding. Combined with a more general passion for learning and a light-hearted approach to interacting with my students, I hope to spur others on to love of people, difference, language, history and culture, in all their beautiful complexity and variety. The following principles guide my teaching and research practice: service with integrity, leadership by example, and respect for human dignity.
Lofty and heady aspirations and principles, I know. At least my beloved cat, Ellie, keeps me humble.
