According to the International Labour Organization (ILO) (2019), “[w]orkplace wellbeing relates to all aspects of working life, from the quality and safety of the physical environment, to how workers feel about their work, their working environment, the climate at work and work organisation”.

What it means for SU - SHW is receiving increasing focus and prioritisation. The COVID-19 pandemic has brought this into even sharper focus. As an institution we wish to embody the values of compassion, empathy and care with respect to the health and wellbeing of our employees at all levels of the organisation. Our desire is for all our employees to feel empowered and supported.

????Wellbeing Programmes

An employer benefit program designed to assists employees with personal and/or work-related challenges that may impact their health and wellbeing, as well as their job performance.

Assists employees to recognise, understand and find solutions to their personal and or work related challenges
Creates a platform for staff to get professional help with new and or existing difficult work management issues

  • Confidentiality is a cornerstone of the profession, consistent with all the professional standards, ethics, and legal requirements that regulate the management of information.
  • Voluntarism - Participation in the EAP services shall be voluntary. SU Management will have the prerogative to recommend a troubled employee.
  • Non-stigmatization - Employees who are using the EAP/EWP services shall not be discriminated against in line with the SU observance of employee's rights

Our hours are from 08:00 – 16:30.

The EAP office is located in the Human Resources Division, Administrative Building Block C, Victoria Street, Stellenbosch (Click on map).

Self-referral to the provider: – it takes 3 – 7 days before you are appointed a clinical practitioner

Managerial referral: – 3- 5 days

Trauma and or crisis intervention: – 48 hours

Wellbeing office response time: – 48 hours

It depends on the nature of the request. For EAP/ EWP you will meet a wellbeing trained professional counsellor and or practitioner.

The wellbeing programme works in partnership with the internal resources Gymnasium (Coetzenburg and Tygerberg) who has gymnasium facilities and fitness programmes for staff.

Occupational Health (OH)?

  • OH, at SU is a part of CHS that work to promote and maintain the highest degree of physical and mental wellbeing of all employees.
  • OH, teamwork includes identifying Occupational health risks, conducting of medical surveillance assessments, and managing work related ill health and injuries.

Inform you line manager/Head of Department immediately

  • Contact Campus Health Services (CHS) is responsible for medical care regarding IODs.
  • CHS’s contact numbers during office hours are 021 808 3496/3494/3492
  • All other injuries that require medical assistance must be referred to Stellenbosch Mediclinic, 1 Elsie du Toit drive (tel. 021 861 2000).
  • Seriously injured persons and After-hours injuries must be transported to Mediclinic by ambulance
  • Please do not seek private medical care with following this process
  • Tygerberg Campus – where to report seriously injured person after hours:
    ODs of this degree must be reported to the line manager and transport by ambulance (10177 or 084124) to Mediclinic Louis Leipoldt, Broadway Street Bellville (Tel: 021 949 3681). Also contact the Nursing Practitioner on duty or Letitia Norval at CHS (021 938 9590) or Mrs A Williams at Finances (021-808 4552) to report IOD and complete the WCL2 form.

Contact wellbeing office for initial assessment, wellness will refer to appropriate role players.?
