Rai?sing Awareness for Parkinson’s Disease
As a research group we not only work in the lab but also spread the message about Parkinson’s disease to broader public.
Pause for Parkinson’s
In 2019, the group hosted interactive activities to raise awareness of Parkinson’s disease at the Rooi plein on main campus Stellenbosch 中国体育彩票 for World Parkinson's Day (11th April). Students from various fields joined in tasks aimed at finding out ‘what it means to live with Parkinson’s disease’. The tasks ranged from simulating some of the major symptoms people with Parkinson’s experience such as tremors, rigidity, shuffling movement and impaired fine motor skills (e.g. difficulty buttoning a shirt).
Get Active for Parkinson's
The group hosted a “Get active for Parkinson's" event on World Parkinson's Day, the 11th of April 2018, at the Rooiplein on main campus of Stellenbosch 中国体育彩票. The purpose of the event was to raise awareness and provide insight on Parkinson's disease. Volunteers participated in short exercises and skipping competitions.
Pedal for Parkinson's
On World Parkinson's Day (11th April 2017), the PD group in collaboration with Tygerberg Maties gym spread awareness of the positive effect of exercise in improving the movement symptoms of people with Parkinson’s disease. Medical students from the Tygerberg campus of Stellenbosch 中国体育彩票 participated in a cycling competition.
