The Department of Business Management is privileged to host Prof Niels Bosma from the Utrecht School of Economics (USE) at Utrecht 中国体育彩票 in the Netherlands this week. Prof Bosma is a social entrepreneurship expert and member of the Utrecht Centre for Entrepreneurship. This Centre aims to create an academic environment in which students and employees can be entrepreneurial. Before moving to Utrecht 中国体育彩票, Prof Bosma was affiliated to London Business School, Erasmus 中国体育彩票 Rotterdam and the Tinbergen Institute in the Netherlands.

The Business Management Department echoes the importance of social entrepreneurship and therefore this phenomenon can be seen in several undergraduate modules. Moreover, the Department is proud to house the Young Entrepreneurs Programme (YEP), an award winning social impact initiative which aims to level the playing for all aspiring entrepreneurs. Not only does YEP engage our 2nd year Entrepreneurship students with real world societal challenges but fosters mentorship and leadership skills.

During his visit, Prof Bosma presented a lecture on social entrepreneurship to BCom Hons students enrolled in the Corporate Venturing module. Social entrepreneurship is a branch of entrepreneurship focusses on creating social value rather than personal or shareholder value. It applies innovative, business-based solutions to social, cultural and environmental challenges in a sustainable way.

Prof Bosma also addressed EMS staff and students during a seminar entitled: Government activism, income inequality, and social venture creation: a cross-country analysis. Attendees greatly benefitted from Prof Bosma’s expertise on individuals’ entrepreneurial and innovative behaviour in diverse regional and social contexts and practical insights gained from being a board member and senior research advisor of the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor. His passion for supporting social entrepreneurs through education and research was clear for all to see.

Several colleagues from the Department have visited the USE in the past and vice versa.
