What is this? The PREDAC short course is a free annual offering for newly appointed lecturers at Stellenbosch 中国体育彩票 (SU). It provides a space for participants from various faculties to reflect on their teaching, learning, and assessment practices in light of current thinking in higher education. The course covers practical teaching strategies and national and institutional policy frameworks and encourages participants to apply these insights meaningfully within their disciplines. It also supports the development of a personal teaching framework and fosters collegial connections across faculties, helping new staff integrate into SU's institutional culture.
A recent contact session brought together passionate educators and innovators to share transformative teaching, learning, and assessment (TLA) practices.
Session 1 focused on TLA practices as shared by SU academics, with thought-provoking contributions from:
Dr Philip Southey on cognitive science and peer instruction in large classes;
Prof Karin Jacobs on real-world readiness in science education;
Prof Pieter Neethling sharing practical TLA strategies that work;
Prof Geo Quinot introducing team-based learning for engagement and collaboration; and
Dr Benita Bobo energising the room with active learning and student engagement.
Session 2 shifted to personal and professional development:
Prof Faadiel Essop inspired with his teaching journey and impact.
Lidia du Plessis from SU International shared valuable global tools and support.
Sarah Richmond from the Unit for Global Learning outlined the Institutional Framework for Global Learning.
A participant shared, “It was really great to hear from fellow academics and what they have tried that has both worked and not worked." Another said, “I enjoyed the programme very much. I thought that the practical tips on teaching were incredibly useful."
We are grateful for a day of learning, connection, and renewed purpose in advancing inclusive, innovative, and impactful higher education.
