We spoke to Acting Dean, Professor Pieter von Wielligh who lectures auditing on his experience as a lecturer at the EMS Faculty and his advice to future generations. Here is what he had to say.
Why did you choose to become an academic/lecturer?
I wanted to make a change in young people's lives by contributing to their development into well-rounded and workplace ready prospective employees with a bright future ahead of them.
Is there a part of your job that you enjoy most?
As a lecturer: seeing the "lights come on" in a student's eyes when I explain a concept with which they previously struggled.
As the Acting Dean: meeting and interacting with such a diverse group of interesting and inspiring people, including students, staff, parents and others; and being able to offer support to a variety of wonderful initiatives in the EMS Faculty and beyond, that can really positively impact the economy and society locally, nationally, regionally and internationally.
What advice would you give to EMS students and/or future professionals?
Humankind is blessed with diversity. Don't compare yourself to others. Instead, set challenging, yet achievable goals for yourself and then go all out to achieve them: achievable goals are like dreams with deadlines.
Please tell us something about yourself that is not work-related.
The beautiful Mediterranean country of Greece has a very special place in my heart. I've been there about 30 times on holiday and visiting friends. It is one of my "happy places" on planet earth.
