Abstract:

Understanding the physical properties of biological cells and cell-like systems is a fundamental scientific challenge. The complexity of living systems demands new theoretical concepts while unveiling fascinating emergent phenomena. The physics of living systems seeks to uncover the principles of cellular function through a reductionist approach, distilling complexity into minimal models. This strategy, combining experiment and theory, offers deeper insights into biological organization. But how far can it take us? Can it reveal the physical principles of cellular functionality? Most intriguingly, can we harness this knowledge to create life-like systems, even artificial cells? This talk will explore these questions and the potential of physics to decode the foundations of life.

Brief bio

Prof. Dr. Erwin Frey is the chair of theoretical physics at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universit?t München, Germany, working at the interface of physics, nanoscience, and biology. His research focuses on theoretical approaches to understanding emergent phenomena in complex biomolecular systems. This includes the biophysics of biopolymers and the cytoskeleton, intercellular transport processes, self-assembly processes, and pattern formation. A central theme of his research is the identification and characterization of universal principles and mechanisms underlying living or life-like systems. He is the recipient of multiple awards, including the Max-Planck Medal in 2024.??
