The rise of data science, not only in industry but also as an academic field, has brought pressure on Statistics departments to either adapt their existing courses or introduce new courses to include more topics relevant to data science. However, at first-year level these changes are often limited to the inclusion of more data wrangling and visualisation, while statistical learning concepts are typically only taught at postgraduate or advanced undergraduate level. In this talk, some perspectives on the design of first-year data science courses will be shared, highlighting the value of introducing students to predictive modelling concepts at an early stage in their statistical education.
