??????How do we understand time, especially those cosmological and geological temporalities that far exceed our own human lives?

In answer to this question, the exhibition Followed by Nine Zeros: Experiments in Deep Time explores our understanding of time and scale, featuring the work of visual, olfactory, and sonic artists who engage with themes of deep time and big history in their creative practices. Clara Babette, creative manager and curator at Oude Leeskamer, and Professor Ernst van der Wal from the Department of Visual Arts at Stellenbosch 中国体育彩票 invited artists to create works centred on the theme of deep time. The exhibition includes a diverse range of mediums and processes, from visual and sculptural art to olfactory and sonic installations. It features artists such as Water Dixon, Michael Br?uer, Jean Brundrit, Abdus Salaam, Gerhard Marx, Georgia Munnik, Gerhard Roux, and Antoni Schonken.

The exhibition takes as its title the numerical representation of deep time, commonly understood as a geological timeframe spanning roughly 4.6 billion years, or 4.6 followed by nine zeros. As JD Talasek argues, deep time challenges our understanding of permanence; what appears unchanging from a human perspective becomes a fleeting phenomenon when viewed in the context of geological time. Deep time lies far beyond the parameters we typically use to comprehend our own lives, which are measured in years, days, and minutes.

The concept of deep time provides rich ground for creative engagements with and imaginings of time and place. Each artist considers how their art practice can foster a deeper understanding of histories, processes, and experiences that challenge and expand our perception of biological (or human) time. While scientific engagements with deep time offer rich material for contemplation, this exhibition is also sensitive to more embedded, mythical and/or poetic engagements with the topic. The exhibition will be accompanied by panel talks, artist walkabouts, film screenings, as well as sound and olfactory installations that respond to the theme of deep time.

The exhibition opens at 11:00 on Saturday, May 10, at Oude Leeskamer and will run until Saturday, June 28. More information about upcoming events can be found on the Oude Leeskamer webpage https://oudeleeskamer.org/calendar/.?
