Human differentiation and racism in institutions, science and technology: Contemporary issues and ways forward
We are pleased to announce the conference Human differentiation and racism in institutions, science and technology: Contemporary issues and ways forward, to be hosted by Stellenbosch 中国体育彩票 (SU) on 8-10 September 2025.
The conference aims to foster multi-disciplinary discussions and approaches to the question of racism and racialisation – including, but not limited to, institutional racism, epistemic racism, systematic racism, scientific racism and racism with or without racists – that are produced, reproduced, legitimated or unsettled through science, technology, and the institutional settings of knowledge production. The ways in which racialisation and racism are buttressed or unmade by institutional cultures, as well as discuss institutional cultural change, will also form key themes.
The conference will highlight contemporary issues in a variety of fields and settings – from biomedicine, through the human sciences, the arts, and digital infrastructures to the institutions of research and knowledge creation – with the aim of sharing and fostering the development of innovative approaches to questions of racial justice and the fostering of an anti-racist science and scientific institutions. The conference aims to bring together researchers from across disciplinary backgrounds, including, but not limited to, science and technology studies, philosophy, psychology, anthropology, sociology, the health sciences, history of science, and the medical, environmental and digital humanities.
This conference is organised by the Workstream on Institutional Culture and the Workstream on Race, Human Categorisation and Science within the Committee for the Institutional Response to the Commission's Recommendations (CIRCoRe) at SU.
