Service Delivery - Subspecialist Paediatrics

Paediatric Pulmonology

Paediatric Pulmonology runs a comprehensive pulmonology service for infants and child. The service is internationally recognised for its invasive paediatric bronchoscopy service and management of congenital and acquired airway narrowing.

This unit sees the following patients:

1.    Neonatal related lung disease which includes upper airway disease, congenital lesions and ventilation induced lung disease. Treatment of antenatal lung lesions diagnosed on ultrasound.

2.    Infant and childhood related lung disease:

  • Congenital lung problems
  • Acute infective lung conditions (pneumonia, empyema, lung abscess)
  • Chronic infective disease
  • Pulmonary Complications of Immunologic Disorders
  • HIV related lung disease
  • PTB including complicated pulmonary tuberculosis
  • Upper airway disease
  • Rare lung diseases including interstitial disease, alveolar proteinosis

3.    Allergy service, treating both acute and chronic problems

4.    Tracheostomy unit, providing in hospital and also a home-based program for children with tracheostomies

5.    Cystic fibrosis patients in conjunction with gastroenterology

6.    Oncology patients that include lung tumours and disease and treatment related lung problems in these patients

7.    Complicated pulmonary tuberculosis

8.    Providing a service to children with chronic lung disease needing home oxygen.

?The Unit is accredited by the Health Professions Council of South Africa as a training unit for the Certificate in Paediatric Pulmonology.
