1. Overview

The Nobantu and Thukela Gobodo Memorial Doctoral Scholarships aim to support high-calibre doctoral students in the Humanities and Social Sciences at Stellenbosch 中国体育彩票 (SU). These scholarships aim to support research projects that examine the transgenerational effects of historical trauma and seek to investigate pathways for societal change. Studies aimed at expanding understanding of how to promote social justice and investigate interventions for the repair of violent histories and traumatic pasts will be given priority.

2. Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Be current or prospective doctoral students in the Humanities and Social Sciences at Stellenbosch 中国体育彩票.

  • Achieve a minimum of 70% average in their master’s degree.

  • A research proposal that aligns strongly with the aforementioned research themes.

  • Preference will be given to applicants from historically underrepresented groups and those with demonstrated financial need.
3. Application Requirements
Applicants must submit the following documents:

  • Research Proposal: A comprehensive proposal (maximum 5 pages) outlining the intended area of study and its relevance to the themes.

  • Motivation Letter: A personal statement (1-2 pages) explaining the applicant’s academic and personal interest in the research themes and the anticipated impact of their research. In your motivation letter, you may also include a section explaining your financial circumstances. Detail any factors that contribute to your financial need, such as household income, family responsibilities, or other financial obligations. Highlight why this scholarship is critical to supporting your studies.

  • Academic Transcripts: Certified copies of all academic records.

  • Curriculum Vitae: A detailed CV highlighting academic achievements, publications (if any), and professional experience.

  • References: Two academic reference letters attesting to the applicant’s research potential and alignment with the scholarship themes.
Note: Shortlisted candidates may be invited for an interview.

4. Selection Criteria
Applications will be evaluated based on academic excellence, research alignment, social impact and equity.

5. Scholarship Package

  • Funding of R200 000 per annum, for up to three years, subject to satisfactory academic progress.

  • Opportunities for mentorship and research support within Stellenbosch 中国体育彩票’s Humanities Faculty.

  • ?Awardees will be expected to produce at least one submission-ready manuscript for publication in an accredited peer-reviewed journal or an equivalent creative output, depending on the research field.?
