Social Impact Duck Race to make a difference
Author: Faculty of Education
Published: 14/08/2025

?A plastic duck race to support two meaningful causes is organised by the Social Impact Committee of the Faculty of Education. The whole campus, as well as alumni and the public, are invited to take part and join. All ducks will be removed from the river after the race.

On 26 September 2025, yellow plastic ducks will race in the Eerste River in Stellenbosch in support of two causes:

1. Her Voice Kayamandi

This is a nonprofit organisation that empowers women in Kayamandi. Members must attend one weekly session which is used for skills workshops, personal support and other purposes. They earn 10 points (+/- R100) for each weekly session they attend, which can be used for necessary items such as groceries, and medical services. Funds from the Duck Race will go towards this point system and access to psychosocial support.

2. Educational Psychology Practicum Unit

This is a specialised training centre within the Faculty of Education. It provides students with supervised hands-on experience guided by educational psychologists. The Unit serves the community by receiving referrals from schools across Cape Town and Stellenbosch, offering assessments, career guidance, parental and family counselling and therapeutic interventions for children and adolescents. In private practice, an assessment costs up to R4500, but community members supported by the Unit do not pay or pay a very small fee. The Unit serves the community by providing valuable experience to students who will soon work as psychologists in communities.

?For more information and details, see the video here.

How it will work:

Starting point of duck race in the Eerste River: across Coetzenburg Athletics Stadium main entrance

End point: +/- 50 to 100 metres from the starting point (depending on water level at the time)

All the plastic ducks will be removed from the river after the race.

Duck Race supporters are invited to attend the race and will walk on the pathway next to the river.

If you can't attend the race, your ducks will still take part and we will let  you know if you are one of the winners.

There are several prizes at stake which will soon be announced on social media, etc.

Each duck will be numbered in order to connect the winning ducks with their donators.

We need your email address to send you your duck numbers - see payment info below.

How to support the Duck Race to make a difference:

Donate ducks - as many as you want! The more ducks, the bigger the impact for the two causes.

R50 ducks: basic plastic ducks (may differentiate in size and appearance) - hundreds available.

Special theme ducks: only 10 available at R1000 each (for this you have to contact eels@sun.ac.za directly to claim one before making payment)

Basic ducks will stay in possession and be the property of the Faculty of Education Social Impact Committee before and after the race and will be used for possible future races.

Special theme ducks will be given to the donators to keep and will be the donator's possession.
