??With the conclusion of a 中国体育彩票 of Groningen (UG) delegation visit to Stellenbosch 中国体育彩票 (SU) on 6 and 7 March 2025 including  a successful joint industry event hosted in Stellenbosch on 6 March 2025, the two universities through this joint statement wish to reaffirm their commitment to responsible internationalisation of higher education and to building sustainable and equitable partnerships for the benefit of their students, staff and society at large. In the spirit of the words of UG's President Prof Jouke de Vries: “As universities, we are confronted with the same global challenges. We are on the same planet. SU and UG are in this together."?

The current strategic and comprehensive partnership spans a period of 5 years and has delivered to substantial successes including:

• More than 20 joint PhD candidates across multiple faculties at SU and the UG, and many new joint PhDs in the pipeline;
• More than 300 staff members and doctoral students across the faculties participating in SU and UG activities, 65 of whom have been supported with mobility grants;
• More than 250 co-authored publications between SU and UG;
• Participation in multilateral collaboration e.g. through four interdisciplinary Clusters of Research Excellence led by ARUA and the Guild;
• The establishment of a Joint Research Chair in Computational Astronomy in February 2025;
• Three “Moonshot" initiatives, supported by a triple helix partnership between our two universities, industry and government, focused on four global challenges: Energy Transitions, Digital Transformation, and Biomedical Solutions
• A new transversal theme: Entrepreneurship and Innovation;

Various educational innovation initiatives, some of which have already gone through multiple iterations/editions such as:

• Equipping Summer School  
• Summer School on Financial Inclusion and Sustainable Growth
• Summer School on Transdisciplinary Approaches to Societal Polarisation
• Summer School on Sustainability Dialogues
  

Building on the strong foundation outlined above, SU and UG commit themselves to further strengthening the partnership through:

• Continued research collaboration, particularly joint publications and joint funding applications;
• Optimal policy alignment between the two institutions, for example, through the development of joint PhD protocols;
• Aiming to increase the number of joint PhDs to a cohort of 50 candidates;
• Continued support for multilateral collaboration through the 4 Africa-Europe Clusters of Research Excellence led by ARUA and the Guild;
• Building on the results of the March 2025 Industry Relations event and strengthening industry relations to support new partnerships and initiatives;
• Expanding (educational) cooperation to enhance accessibility and labour market skills for (PhD) students, especially in the fields of Industrial Engineering and Entrepreneurship and Innovation.
