The Corporate Communication and Marketing Division (CCMD) offers an informative and interactive workshop on how SU academics and researchers can engage with the media (incl social media).
To be held from 10:00 – 13:00 in the Indaba Room in Admin B on Tuesday 8 April 2025, the “Seven benefits of engaging with the media" workshop not only explains these benefits but also seven ways in which the Media Office at CCMD can support academics and researchers in this process.
Some of the topics to be discussed are:
- why a researcher's research profile is built via greater interaction with the media (as one of the seven benefits highlighted)
- how social media can be used as a tool in advancing a research career
- media myths (“The media is only into sensational stuff, right?")
- how video content can be used (“what makes a great 1 min video on your research?")
- what kind of support is there for researchers who are engaging with the media.
- Why writing for The Conversation Africa is a great (and safe) start for scientists.
The media landscape is explained by using practical examples of articles in which SU staff members are quoted, as well as radio and TV inserts and a short explanation is given on how colleagues can use the media and social media to increase exposure. [VM1] In the process, a fear of the media is dispelled.
