What you’ll learn
The lecture will introduce the Monetary Architecture (MA) approach for understanding the architecture of SA’s financial eco-system. By unders tanding this eco-system as a ‘web of interlocking balance shee ts’ it is possible to map the interrelationships between the vast array of SA’s financial institutions, from the SARB down through commercial banks, DFIs, institutional investors and shadow banks on the monetary side, and from the National Treasury downwards through the entire fiscal syste m, including SOEs. The aim is to identify possible elasticity spaces for mobilising new capital flows for infrastructure investments. This can be achieved via a set of balance sheet reconfigurations that unlock capital investments in the energy, water, digital and food sectors in particular.
