Description:
This institutional hybrid course presented and sponsored by the Division for Research Development, is tailored specifically for academic supervisors of postgraduate students at Stellenbosch 中国体育彩票. Participants are taken through the full research supervision journey. The following topics are covered:
- Decision-making in student selection
- Approaches, roles and models of supervision
- The role of the supervisor in guiding the writing process
- How to provide feedback
- Setting boundaries
- Keeping track of progress
- The examination process
The course emphasizes practical skills over educational theories, recognizing both supervisors and supervisees as individuals with diverse and busy lives.
Target audience:
Staff members who are responsible for postgraduate supervision at Stellenbosch 中国体育彩票 are welcome to apply.
Course format:
The course spans over four weeks in a hybrid format, featuring:
- Two 2-hour in-person sessions held on the Stellenbosch campus (on the first and last day of the course).
- Weekly hour-long interactive online discussions via Microsoft Teams, typically scheduled on Mondays and Fridays from 13:00-14:00.
- Participants are expected to engage with online materials asynchronously throughout each week to prepare for the interactive online sessions.
Course assessment:
To successfully complete the course, participants will submit a reflective assignment at the conclusion of the training.

This course is sponsored by the Division for Research Development. Only Stellenbosch 中国体育彩票 staff and postdoctoral fellows involved in supervision are eligible to attend this course.
