?The Faculty of Science is celebrating National Science Week with a range of talks and events in the month of August. This includes panel discussions on careers in the biological, physical and mathematical sciences, a look at the life and work of a women mathematician, to the value of fundamental research. The month's activities are supported by the Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf) and the International Year of Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development (IYBSSD).

Postgraduate students in the Departments of Microbiology, Biochemistry and Genetics share their research projects under the themes of "Molecular solutions for a sustainable Africa" and "Antimicrobial development for health". Click here to join or e-mail trudy@sun.ac.za

Careers in the Biological Sciences: Engage with industry representatives from Distell, Carl Zeiss Pty Ltd, Inizio Medical, Axiology Labs, the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) and SAPS Forensics Science Laboratory.  The panel discussion will be from 12:00-14:00, with breaks for those who have to leave for class. If you cannot attend the panel discussion, please feel free to engage with these representatives from14:00-15:00 in the foyer of the Neelsie Cinema.

 Careers in the Physical and Mathematical Sciences: Engage with industry representatives from SASOL, Reutech, GEOSS and SAPS Forensics Science Laboratory.  The panel discussion will be from 12:00-14:00, with breaks for those who have to leave for class. If you cannot attend the panel discussion, please feel free to engage with these representatives from14:00-15:00 in the foyer of the Neelsie Cinema.?

Movie night: “Secrets of the Surface" featuring the life and work of Maryam Mirzakhani, first woman mathematician to win the Fields Medal. Dr Bruce Bartlett and Dr Karin-Therese Howell will open the evening with an explanation of the significance of her work. Free popcorn for those who attend!

Wednesday 24 August I  12:30-14:00  I  Neelsie Cinema

Is science still relevant? In this Science Café Stellenbosch talk, Prof Len Barbour talks about the value of fundamental research. He is a research professor in the Department of Chemistry and Polymer Science. Free popcorn for those attending!
